ABOUT US


The American Sailing Academy (ASA) is the premier sailing instruction center located  in Mystic Connecticut

The ASA is the premier sailing school in Connecticut and is dedicated to promoting safe recreational sailing  by administering an internationally recognized educational system. 

 

Sailing Instruction in Connecticut

Whether you are a beginner, a novice or an experienced sailor, we can offer you a curriculum that will improve your skills and understanding of the sport. If your particular needs don't exactly fit within the standard curriculum, we will tailor a course of instruction to fit your needs.

Our goal for every student is to develop their competence, which leads to safety, confidence, and enjoyment while on the water. 

OUR INSTRUCTORS

Captain Terry Leahy, Owner, has been teaching ASA certified courses for over 15 years and is a Coast Guard licensed Captain. His lifetime of sailing experience based on cruising, racing, pleasure crafting, and teaching in coastal and inland waters, provides him the expertise to tailor instructions to each student's needs.

Captain Mike Caprio,  Mike’s career was teaching, he taught Radiation Biology and Radiological Physics After retirement, he wanted to continue teaching.  Becoming a sailing instructor lead him to obtain his USCG Captain’s license and becoming an ASA instructor. He currently holds a USCG 25-Ton Near Coastal Master’s license

and is ASA certified to teach Basic Keelboat (101), Basic Coastal Cruising (103), Bareboat Cruising (104),

Coastal Navigation (105), Cruising Catamaran (114), and Dinghy and Outboard Motor Operation (116).

Basic Keelboat: 101

Basic Keelboat 101

 Basic Keelboat Sailing (ASA 101)

Prerequisites:

  • Simply the desire to learn to Sail!

The Basic Sailing course includes the theory and practice of sailing on all points of sail. 

Upon completion the student should be able to handle a similar size 32 or 35 foot sailboat in light to moderate wind and sea conditions in familiar waters.

  • The course is taught in two (full) days (9am to 4:30pm). Each day begins with a short lecture onboard on terms, theory, and boat orientation followed by on the water  

Topics included are:

  • Sailing and sailboat terminology

  • The theory of sailing

  • Boat handling and seamanship skills

  • Safety equipment and procedures

  • "Heaving to" maneuvers

  • Emergency and "person overboard" procedures

  • How to use a compass and read charts

  • Aids to navigation and navigation rules

  • Basic knots tying and applications

Sailing skills are tested on the water, followed by a written examination. By the time we're finished you'll have the skills necessary to go day sailing with confidence.

We have found that we can optimize the learning experience by limiting the class size to 4 or 5 students and one instructor. Each student is constantly involved, alternating between skipper and crew, in learning the roles and responsibilities of each and how they must work together.

Tuition is $640.00 per student which includes classes, on water instructions, and ASA Certification (a 3.5% credit card fee applies to all credit card purchases).

Course Schedule: Tuesday/Wednesday or Saturday/Sunday every week.

BCC 103

Course Desciption

 Coastal Cruising (ASA 103)

  Prerequisites:

  • Basic Keelboat Sailing (ASA 101)

This is a two day cruising experience on a sailing yacht 30 feet or larger. You will learn how to handle a vessel under power and sail in moderate wind and sea conditions. Overnight stay aboard is optional.

You will be introduced to the location, operation and daily maintenance of the yacht's systems; Fresh Water, Fuel, Gray Water, Waste, Electrical and Propane/CNG. The diesel engine/drive system will be also be covered in class.

You will use local charts and learn to plot your course and use tide and current tables. You will be introduced to Electronic NAV utilizing hand held and fixed GPS units.

During the cruise, you will become familiar with the location, operation and purpose of each item of a cruising yacht's inventory of gear and equipment.

You will learn how to work as skipper and as crew while maneuvering the yacht under power and sail, including close quarter situations such as mooring, anchoring and docking. Throughout, you will be drilled on safety, navigation, weather, terminology and deck skills.

BBC 104

 Bareboat Charter Certification (ASA 104)

  Prerequisites:

  • Basic Sailing (ASA 101) and BCC (ASA 103)

This is an advanced course for individuals with the prerequisite ASA certifications and cruising experience who are seeking the qualifications to be certified for bareboat chartering. It is a 3 day class comprised of 3-day live aboard cruise for learning and demonstrating your skills and self-sufficiency in all aspects of operating and maintaining the yacht and all its systems in all conditions.

The course is taught over three days while living aboard, practicing boat handling and sailing skills, proving your self-sufficiency and coping with Murphy's Law.

You will be coached and challenged in situations that every cruising sailor ultimately faces:

  • Troubleshooting common problems

  • Docking off the wind or down current

  • Safety at sea

  • Weather watching

  • Navigation in limited visibility

  • Kedging off

  • Planning landfall in adverse conditions

  • Sail selection, handling and trim


In addition, you will become comfortable using shipboard electronics and navigation instruments. You should finish the course feeling confident that you can skipper a yacht of comparable size and handle those unforeseen circumstances.

An additional two day class is available for qualified students

Tuition is $1300.0 per student which includes classes, on water instructions, and ASA Certification (a 3.5% credit card fee applies to all credit card purchases).

Course Schedule: Wednesday/Thursday or Saturday/Sunday every week.

Coastal Navigation CON 105

A Home Study Course



 

Prerequisites:

  • The desire to learn how to navigate our waters safely.

This is an intense course in charting and piloting which prepares you to navigate safely and confidently in all conditions of visibility.

The navigation course is conducted in 2 phases. First, the students prepare by utilizing the home study course materials at their own pace. Practice problems are heavily weighted toward the exam and are designed to both challenge and enforce the student's knowledge of navigation theory. Next,when you have completed the course manual, call and set-up you're testing date. Approximately 3 hours are allowed. Test will cover general information, plotting, position finding, use of tides and current tables. The exam uses a similar chart as the study materials and you must show your work using standard navigation notations, which is graded as part of your answer.

When ready you can take the exam proctored by your local library at no additional cost. Alternatively, we will offer a fall and early spring review class and the exam for an additional $100.

  • Navigation Manuals, Training DVD, Training Charts, Practice Problems, Parallels, Dividers.

Topics covered:

  • The use of all publications required to navigate safely and confidently:

    • Charts, including symbols and conventions
    • Federal requirements for recreational boats
    • USCG navigation rules
    • Tide and Current tables
    • Lists of lights, buoys and fog signals
    • Notices to Mariners

  • The proper use of navigational tools and instruments

  • Time, speed and distance calculations

  • Relative bearings and running fixes

  • The meaning and interpretation of compass deviation and variation


 By Tom Tursi. 154-page textbook, 127-page solution book, 8 1/2" x 11" metal bound with instructional DVD. The textbook outlines the needed information to learn basic navigational skills. In addition to the textbook, a separate step by step instructional book is provided containing expanded solutions to plotting questions. Visually learn plotting skills by viewing the DVD. Includes a training chart

CANCELLATION OR DELAY OF COURSE BY SCHOOL

The School reserves the right to cancel or delay courses due to weather conditions and staff issues. If a class is cancelled by us, arrangements will be made to make up the class or give sailing credits to be used by the student at a later date.

CANCELLATION/RESCHEDULING BY STUDENT

The following are the periods of notice required in order to reseive a refund for rescheduling or cancelling a course:

  • 60+ Days from Original Course Date: 90% refund or 100% credit of amount paid to apply to a future course*
  • 30+ Days from Original Course Date: 50% refund or 90% credit of amount paid to apply to a future course*
  • Less than 30 Days from Original Date: 25% refund or 75% credit of amount paid to apply to a future course*

We ask that you let us know immediately should you need to change your reservation for any reason

* Prices for courses are subject to change from one year to the next. Credit given will be for a dollar amount and not for a specific course. That dollar amount may be applied to any course that we offer.
