Coastal Cruising (ASA 103)
Prerequisites:
- Basic Keelboat Sailing (ASA 101)
This is a two day cruising experience on a sailing yacht 30 feet or larger. You will learn how to handle a vessel under power and sail in moderate wind and sea conditions. Overnight stay aboard is optional.
You will be introduced to the location, operation and daily maintenance of the yacht's systems; Fresh Water, Fuel, Gray Water, Waste, Electrical and Propane/CNG. The diesel engine/drive system will be also be covered in class.
You will use local charts and learn to plot your course and use tide and current tables. You will be introduced to Electronic NAV utilizing hand held and fixed GPS units.
During the cruise, you will become familiar with the location, operation and purpose of each item of a cruising yacht's inventory of gear and equipment.
You will learn how to work as skipper and as crew while maneuvering the yacht under power and sail, including close quarter situations such as mooring, anchoring and docking. Throughout, you will be drilled on safety, navigation, weather, terminology and deck skills.
Sailing skills are tested on the water, followed by a written examination. By the time we're finished you'll have the skills necessary to go day sailing with confidence.
We have found that we can optimize the learning experience by limiting the class size to 4 or 5 students and one instructor. Each student is constantly involved, alternating between skipper and crew, in learning the roles and responsibilities of each and how they must work together.
Tuition is $640.00 per student which includes classes, on water instructions, and ASA Certification (a 3.5% credit card fee applies to all credit card purchases).
Course Schedule: Tuesday/Wednesday or Saturday/Sunday every week.
